Penang

The museums of Penang are a good way to discover its history and heritage. Visitors and tourists can visit several museums across the island, such as; the Penang War Museum, which records the second world war in Malaysia; Penang State Museum, the official repository for the state's artifacts and treasures; the toy museum, a magnificent collection of toys from all over the world; and others such as the forestry and Islamic museum.
Penang War Museum
Penang War Museum in Batu Maung
The Penang War Museum in Batu Maung, is a historical relic of the modern wars that was fought in Malaysia. It was once a fortress built by British forces in 1930 to protect Penang against invasion during World War II, but it eventually fell to Japanese troops in 1941. The Japanese, in turn, transformed the fort into a prison camp, executing many soldiers before the end of the war and their eventual surrender.

Today, on this 20 acre land where the museum sits, visitors can experience the lives of soldiers that fought and died on the Malaysian battlefield, at least through authentic displays and exhibits. The fortress is intact with all its structures preserved so that people can explore essential sections such as the barracks, canon firing bays, anti-aircraft stations, command center, mess hall. medical infirmary and even the kitchen. The fortress was also known as 'ghost hill' for a time after the Japanese occupation. The many tunnels that wind underground provide another adventure to do while in the Penang War Museum. Open daily from mornings till evenings, the war museum is a great tourist attraction to visit.
Penang State Museum
Penang State Museum in Farquhar Street
The Penang State Museum is located in Farquhar Street, between Kapitan Keling and Love Lane, near the Fort Cornwallis, and was formerly the Penang Free School before it got bombed during the war. Built in two wings, only one survived the war, which is the colonial era mansion that stands in its place today. Described as one of Malaysia's best museums, this place is a repository for priceless treasures, antiques and historical relics from the past.

Visitors are greeted by the bronze statue of Sir Francis Light, the founder of Penang, as they enter the compound. They can then explore the various galleries which are dedicated to historical culture and important events in Penang's history. Visitors can look at ancient photographs, documents, furniture, traditional costumes, clothing, weapons, ceramics and other artifacts related to the many cultures and ethnic groups that arrived and settled in the island. Of special note are the collection of oil painting from Captain Robert Smith, engravings by William Daniell, a railway tram from Penang Hill, handwritten Quran and even items used by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman. The Penang State Museum is a great attraction that should not be missed by visitors to the island.
Toy Museum
Toy Museum in Tanjung Bungah
The Toy Museum in Penang is believed to be one of the largest in the world, with over 100,000 toys, dolls, models and other related memorabilia. The toys found in the museum are from the personal collection of its founder, a local businessman who amassed it from years of travel around the world. Divided into various galleries that showcase different kinds of toys, the toy museum is perfect for children or families to visit. The museum is also interactive in nature, providing sound and light effects in certain galleries. From tiny toys to a 1.8 meter tall Gundam robot from Japan, this museum in Tanjung Bungah awaits interested tourists and visitors.
Islamic Museum
Islamic Museum in Lebuh Armenian
The Islamic Museum is a heritage site, also known as the Syed Al-Attas Mansion, originally built by a spice merchant and trader from Acheh. Situated in Lebuh Armenian, the museum building is a rich blend of Islamic elements and architecture. Inside, visitors and tourists can discover artifacts from the Muslim period such as gravestones, porcelain vases, portraits, ancient writings, old books and other relics. The museum also records the history of Islam in Malaysia and the lives of several Muslim personalities. Besides the religion, the Islamic Museum also showcases highlights of Malay culture and architecture.
Forestry Museum
Forestry Museum in Teluk Bahang
The Penang Forestry Museum is located in Teluk Bahang. Constructed from various types of wood, the museum was opened in 1983 and covers a small site. In the museum, visitors can learn about the different types of wood found in Malaysia and its use for products. Eight different dioramas present the types of forests found in Malaysia, including hill dipterocarp, mangroves, coastal, lowland and highland forests. The museum is important for educating children on the natural heritage of Malaysia and its preservation.
